Kids,
Ok so I interview college students and I think to myself parents where have we gone wrong. And it not the there's anything wrong Perse with this kid, great education, good resume, good school, but then I hit the personality. Ok most of us graduated, and while at school worked our buts off and then still had to work some more just make end meet. So we were happy to get a job and a salary. These kids, they think they graduate and they are owed something. That they will just get a top of the line job and salary, and then look at you funny when you tell them it just is not so.
So parents please I beg you first teach your children humility. But start them off doing chores at a young age, have them learn responsibility for not only themselves but for the things around them. It is not enough to just work at home or watch the siblings, they need to have an outside job so they learn to work with others. They need to learn to dress for work, behave at work and come to work on time. Teenagers need to have at least one job or internship before they go to college, and once in college they need to expand on that.
I know as parents you want to give your child what you did not have, but this attitude is what is giving us this brand of self entitled youth growing up that thinks every thing will be given to them. We need to teach our children to work hard for things and earn them. If they constantly get things for doing nothing they will not know what it feels like to earn something or not have thing. They will not cherish things when you do give them to them. They will not treasure or take care of things. Presents become objects that if they break are easily replaceable because mom and dad can just buy a new one.
Start now early give your children small jobs that they can do, have them earn things they want. Save the big spending put money in college accounts or save it for retirement or a nice family trip. You children will be better off for it.
Please, thank you, sorry, are things this youth is rarely seen using anymore. Teach your boys to hold the doors open, common courtesies. Have your children address there elders as Sir and Mam. Those things go a long way.
Dress attire, is so important. We don't wear flip flops and shorts to work. There may be certain days where that's acceptable but pay attention to your surroundings and what everyone else is wearing.
If your teenagers get internships and jobs at an early age they will be better prepared for this and understand these concepts better. It doesn't matter if you can afford to pay for there car or gas, let then earn it, buy it them self, let them have self worth a sense of self accomplishment by doing it the self.
